Porto

Porto Walking Food tour

As someone born in Porto, raised there, lived there, studied there, worked there for more than 15 years, tried nearly every francesinha there is there, I can say I know this city and it’s my pleasure to show it to you!

Porto doesn’t need any formal introduction. Located in northern Portugal lies along the Douro River (third longest river of the Iberian Peninsula), 2 miles (3 km) from the river’s mouth on the Atlantic Ocean and 175 miles (280 km) north of Lisbon. It’s a vibrant, hilly UNESCO World Heritage city in northern Portugal known for its historic Ribeira district and iconic Port wine. As Portugal’s second-largest city, it is renowned for its granite architecture, rich history and as the birthplace of the nation’s name. Porto was called Portus Cale in Roman times and was earlier a flourishing settlement on the Douro’s south bank; the nomadic Alani tribe later founded the city of Castrum Novum on the north bank. The Visigoths took possession of the site about 540 ce but yielded in 716 to the Moors.

Porto is famous worldwide for Port wine, with many lodges located across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia. The city is known for its unique gastronomy. Francesinha is very popular though it also has many other worth tasting dishes such as fish, unlimited ways of cooking cod (bacalhau), chicken piri-piri (frango no churrasco), pork steak sandwiches (bifanas) or Tripas à Moda do Porto (Porto-style tripe stew / Tripe Porto-style) – Porto is the Northern capital and therefore it has all the portuguese-known northern dishes.

Normally Porto is warm with sunny summers and mild, damp winters.
